DECEPTIVE FOOD

DAILY GRACE THURS. 8TH DEC., 2016 TOPIC: DECEPTIVE FOOD TEXT: PROV. 23:3 Top of a new day beloved of God. God of all grace will grant you saving grace to overcome the lustful appetite in Jesus' name. "Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food." The decision to reason yourself into a holy contempt of the gratifications of sense is a golden steps to breakthrough in life. When you are in danger of falling into any excess, put a knife to your throat, that may serve for once. But that is not enough: lay the axe to the root; mortify that appetite which has such a power over you. Be not desirous of dainties and evil delicacies. You ought to observe what is your own iniquity, and if you find yourselves addicted to flesh-pleasing delicacies, you must not only stand upon your guard against temptations from without, but subdue the corruption within the flesh. Note that the nature is desirous of food, and you must pray against lust that is desirous of dainties, they are not food convenient for mind, body. They are deceitful meat, and therefore David, instead of praying for them, he prayed against them (Ps. 141:4). They may be pleasant to the eyes, and perhaps rise in the stomach, turn sour there, upbraid a man, and make him sick spiritually. They do not yield men the satisfaction they promised themselves from them; for those that are given to appetite, when they have that which is very dainty, are not pleased; they are soon weary of it; they must have something else more dainty. The more luxurious appetite is honoured and indulged, the more troublesome it grows and hard to please. Dainties will surfeit but never satisfy. The deceitful meat may please the body but they prejudice the soul, and spirit; they overcharge the heart and render it unfit it for the service of God. The deceptive food takes away the heart and alienate the mind from spiritual delights, and spoils its consecration. Beloved, why then should you covet that which will certainly cheat you?
